My name is Sergei Kvokov and along with my wife, Heather, we bought 10 acres of land on Green Bluff in 2017, but our story begins well before.
I was born and raised in the Willamette Valley region in Oregon State. The region is known for its rich soil and temperate weather which allows for diverse farms and crops. My family ran a berry farm with marionberries, boysenberries, loganberries and blackberries. At 14 years old, my older brother and his buddies were talking about how they got a job at Yule Tree Farms, a commercial Christmas tree farm in Aurora, OR. I was intrigued but probably more eager to not have to pick berries! The next 4 summers were filled with hard work and learning how to basal prune, shear and culture mainly Douglas Fir.
Heather and I met when she attended college in the area and married in 1993. We moved to the Spokane area in 1996 where Heather's family has a fruit orchard (apples, cherries, peaches, etc.) on Green Bluff. We started our busy careers and a family so we didn't have much to do with the orchard except to occasionally help out at harvest. In 2009, Heather's parents, Rod and Karen Hansen, purchased 10 acres adjacent to their orchard which had Christmas trees of various sizes. I was eager to help! Along with the help of brother-in-law Derrick, we began learning the business end of the Christmas tree business. In 2017, we had an opportunity to purchase 10 acres of an alfalfa field from Phil and Carol Walker not far from Hansen's. We closed on the property in June and the work began to develop our own farm from the ground up.
The first 2 years were spent preparing the land and building a deer fence. In 2020, with the help of our children, Alek and Gabriella, the first 5000 trees were planted on West Rim Farm! In 2021, an additional 1500 were planted and a drip irrigation system was installed. The hard work and fun continues...
